Passive House (Passivhaus) is considered to be the most rigorous international energy-based building standard in construction today. Certified buildings consume up to 90% less heating and cooling energy than conventional buildings. A Passive House building’s primary goal is to achieve a superbly well-insulated and tightly sealed building envelope, then introduce filtered fresh air via a high-efficiency heat recovery ventilation system. Projects must achieve specific airtightness requirements, which are 4 to 5 times more stringent than local code requirements. Passive House requires “thermal bridge free design”, which prevents heat loss through foundation, wall & roof assemblies. To ensure quality criteria targets are being met, projects are independently tested throughout construction.

EightOnThird’s design combines west coast context with Passive House principles. Unique details add a modern aesthetic while achieving the world’s highest efficiency standard. Vertical fins wrap the south face, providing additional solar shading during warm summer months. Deep set in the thick exterior walls, triple glazed European style windows prevent drafts, temperature fluctuations and prevent noise transmission, providing perfectly quiet interior spaces.
